Dear all,

You are cordially invited to join the 16th annual MCS Symposium (conducted in Cantonese) at Talentum Bookshop from 1430 to 2030 on 15 February 2020 (Sat).

This year's theme of the Annual Symposium is ‘Protest and Vote in Hong Kong Cultural Studies’. It aims to showcase outstanding MCS students' papers in the past year, which review Cultural Studies’ response to the current socio-political quagmire and juncture in Hong Kong. The symposium also explores pedagogic futures for the Programme to better articulate the concerns and potentials of our time.

The symposium will address these issues in three parts: the first part, "Will it be 'business as usual' for Cultural Studies in these 'great times'?" We engage authors of outstanding MCS papers to critique each others' work. These works in progress enter into dialogues with discussants to identify newer cause and methods of intervention in this current juncture.

The second part is a roundtable of “The Future of Community Politics – New DC members and Cultural Studies”. The MCS Programme invites seven MCS graduates or students who are newly elected District Councilors (from Happy Valley, Mong Kok North, Mong Kok South, Pik Wui, Nam Cheong South, Kwai Chung Estate South and On Ho) to have a roundtable discussion and explore the relationship between Community Politics and Cultural Studies with the drastic changes in Hong Kong. The roundtable asks: In the context of contemporary society, how to be a good District Councilor to help build an equal and open political community? Do we need to do research in Cultural Studies? Why? What should we do?

At the end of the symposium, we will have a mini-party. Food and drinks will be provided.

We would appreciate it if you could register at (Registration in advance required). If you are interested in the MCS programme, please feel free to make an enquiry about the programme during intermission. For details, please visit

Thank you.
